I remember...
...making sense of a fairly tangled system...

Intro

hundo is an edtech platform designed to connect education with real-world work experience, helping young people develop employability skills through employer-led programmes.

The platform enables educators and organisations to deliver structured virtual work experience, track student progress and manage participation across multiple programmes.

My role focused on designing the admin system used to manage students, organisations and programme cohorts across this complex, data-driven environment. I also designed parts of the user-facing experience, including programme, employer and experience views, shaping a more marketplace-like interface.

The challenge

Delivering virtual work experience at scale required coordinating multiple moving parts across the platform.

Administrators needed to:

  • onboard and manage students and organisations
  • assign learners to programmes and cohorts
  • track participation and progress
  • manage programme structures and availability

These tasks were distributed across complex workflows that were not always clear, especially when dealing with large volumes of users and interconnected data.

Managing Complexity

The platform sits at the intersection of education and employment, connecting:

  • students developing skills and completing tasks
  • educators managing cohorts and outcomes
  • organisations delivering real-world programme content

Each of these entities is interdependent, meaning actions in one part of the system directly affect others.

Designing the admin experience required creating clarity across these relationships while maintaining consistency and scalability.

Constraints

Several constraints shaped the design:

  • Core business logic and relationships between students, cohorts and programmes could not be simplified
  • Multiple user types required different permissions and access levels
  • Workflows needed to scale as the number of users, programmes and partners increased

The challenge was to improve usability without altering the underlying system structure.

The Approach

I focused on making complex workflows easier to understand and operate by:

  • Mapping key journeys across core admin tasks
  • Restructuring flows to reduce friction and unnecessary steps
  • Grouping related actions into clearer, more predictable interactions
  • Improving hierarchy and layout to surface key information and decisions
  • Clarifying system status and next steps to support user confidence

Workflow Example — Assigning Students to Programmes

Assigning students to programmes required navigating dependencies between cohorts, programme availability and organisational structures.

I simplified this by consolidating actions into clearer steps, improving visibility of relationships between entities, and making system status and next actions more explicit.

Outcome

The result was a more intuitive and manageable admin experience, improving clarity across complex workflows and reducing friction in day-to-day operations.

Administrators were better able to manage large datasets, understand system state and make decisions with confidence.
